ANSWER: it is a physical symbol of faux virtue signaling erected by people who are incompetent at doing anything substantive or productive to benefit their fellow citizens. You know, kinda like putting a “Love Your Neighbor” lawn sign out. In other words, a useless gesture at which realists have every right to display a reply gesture of their own— the middle finger.
